Flat Grinding Machine 
Grinding is a process of cutting work objects using grinding machines. In its operation, the workpiece is held or gripped on a magnetic table driven back forth or spun beneath a rotating moving grinding wheel.

Flat grinding machines are one of the most widely used grinding machines for the grinding of workpieces with the aim to obtain the grade and smoothness of the surface and the size of the desired workpiece.

Flat grinding machines are used for grinding surfaces of flat workpieces. The flat surfaces referred to here are parallel flat surfaces, terraced flat surfaces, sloped flat surfaces, flat surfaces of grooves and flat surface profiles.

Grinding is also intended to make a better appearance of the workpiece by eliminating layers of oxide and other impurities on the surface of the workpiece. Flat grinding can also be done to obtain a smooth, fine surface and a precise size used for functional purposes.

Flat grinding machines are one of the most important machines in the industry, in this case the grinding machine is widely used to make industrial components and equipment. Where these components and equipment require precision, smoothness and size so that the components or equipment can function properly.

Thoroughness of flat grinding machines of the type of grinding machine used, but in general accuracy of 0.002 mm can be achieved by most grinding machines.

This flat grinding machine has a spindle or grinding wheel drive shaft with horizontal position and machine table can move straight back and forth.

In the horizontal spindle flat grinding machine and the table moves straight back and forth, the actual grinding takes place on the circumference of the grinding wheel.

The tip or circumference of the grinding wheel is used for grinding the surface of the workpiece, so that this type of grinding machine is often referred to as mobile grinding machine. The cutting depth can be adjusted by raising or lowering the wheel head.

This type of flat grinding machine is used for grinding of workpieces with flat surfaces and angled.

  •  Horizontal spindle flat grinding machine with rotary table motion 

This flat grinding machine has a grinding wheel spindle with horizontal position while moving machine table rotates.

On the horizontal spindle flat grinding machine and movable table rotating the circumference of the grinding wheel are also blocked on the workpiece. A turntable-mounted workpiece is run under a round of grinding wheels.

The flat grinding machine's table can also be tilted to provide special geometry grinding, such as grinding of slanted parts.

This type of flat grinding machine is used for grinding the flat surface of a tube or round shaped workpiece, e.g. flat surface shaft, flange, sleeve and others.


  •  Vertical spindles flat grinding machine with alternating straight counter motion  

This flat grinding machine has a spindle or grinding wheel drive shaft with vertical position with machine table can move straight back and forth.

On the vertical spindle flat grinding machine and the table moving back and forth, the side part or the face of the grinding wheel are faced to the surface of the workpiece. The workpiece that is gripped on the machine table is moved back and forth below the spin of a rotating grinding wheel quickly.

These flat grinding machines are used for grinding of workpieces with flat surfaces, width and angled surfaces.

  • Vertical spindles flat grinding machine with rotating table motion

This flat grinding machine has spindle with vertical position and machine table can move spinning.

On the vertical spindle flat grinding machine and rotating movable table, the side of the grinding wheel is also faced to the surface of the workpiece. The workpiece is gripped and actuated on the turntable under a round of grinding wheels.

This type of flat grinding machine is used to grinding the surface of a wide workpiece as well as a flat surface of tube or round shaped workpiece, such as shaft, piston ring, flange, gears, rotor, force wheel and others.

Based on how it operates, the flat grinding machine can also be distinguished into a manual flat grinding machine, semi-automatic flat grinding machine, automatic flat grinding machine and CNC flat grinding machine.


  1.  Manual Flat Grinding Machine Operation of this flat grinding machine is done manually (by hand). In Manual flat grinding machine, moving or setting machine table for setting and nutrition both in the direction of elongation and cross direction also setting the spindle position of the grinding wheel is done manually.
  2.  Semi-Automatic flat grinding machine  The operation of this type of flat grinding machine is done semi-automatic.   4.  CNC Flat Grinding Machine The service and operation of CNC flat grinding machines (Computer Numerical Control) can be done through orders that are standardized codes and numbers.In CNC flat grinding machine, the setting of table movement both elongated and transverse direction also setting position of spindle wheels and the amount of nutrition can all be done automatically through programming examples on computer.Compared to other types of flat grinding machines, CNC flat grinding machines can produce a high quality of precision and smoothness products and strict tolerances.Main parts of flat grinding machine 


Despite the different types and sizes, flat grinding machines roughly have the same main parts.

  • Base The base has a rectangular construction that serves to support parts of the grinding machine. To provide a rigid foundation, the mat also supports a way that allows the workpiece to move back and forth when the grinding operation is carried out.
  • The column A column or pole is a component located at the top of the engine that supports the spindle and controls the vertical movement of the grinding wheel, which means it also regulates the depth of the grinding.
  • Saddle (Saddle) Sadel is a component that is mounted on the guide path of the grinding machine base. Sadel is part of the grinding machine that supports the table. The movement along the saddle path is controlled by the Crossfeed handwheel.
  • Machine tableThe machine that can move back and forth on the Guide located on the saddle at the table is a component of the workpiece holder. Desk movement along the base guiding path is controlled by a table handwheel.
  • Block Delimiter (Dogs)  The limiter claw is a component that serves to set the table step length or step barrier of the alternating table.
  • Wheel Head The head of the grinding wheel is mounted on a guiding path in the column where the grinding wheel is a spindle housing. The grinding head movement along the guide line in the field is controlled by the wheel feed handwheel.
  • Grinding Wheel Grinding wheels are a cutting tool on grinding machines used for cutting or grinding workpieces. The grinding wheel consists of the sharpening (abrasive) and adhesive material, where the grinding wheel is mounted on the engine spindles.
  • Hydraulic system  The hydraulic system consists of oil tubs, oil, oil pumps, regulator valves and hydraulic cylinders which are machine table drive systems.
  • Cooling system The cooling system consists of a water cooling tub, cooling water, water pumps, hoses and taps. Cooling system is a system that regulates circulation of coolant at the time of grinding.
  • Control Panel In the control Panel there are electrical buttons controlling the spindle motors, oil pumps, coolant pumps and emergency buttons.
